Rainbow Gallery threads are very popular and come in over 3000 colors. Some of these fibers are called Chainettes. They are softer and less expensive than braids, plump, and cover the canvas very well. There is some difficulty initially in learning to use them and controlling fraying.
Another fiber type is called Fuzzy Stuff. These are especially great for the fur on an animal, hair, or beard in your needlepoint work. Although they appear to be too large for the canvas many times, just use a slightly larger needle to push the canvas threads apart and try to use long stitches. Alpaca 18 is a very strong yarn and will not fray easily. It also works well when brushed to create a fuzzy look.
Five fibers make up the Background line, and two of those require special care. BG1 requires a shorter stitch than normal and it is made of Noppee silk. Be careful not to drag this silk across the canvas since it will cause it to tear apart. The other, BG4, a natural linen, has a tendency to untwist. To compensate, turn your needle.
Alabaster is an iridescent shiny metallic chainette thread that is great for snow, ice or anything where you do not want to overpower your other stitching. The "Bravo!" yarn is a cotton floss with each of its four strands equal to pearl cotton size 12. It should be stripped apart and put back together for stitching so that it will lie smoothly. Bravo!, Encore!, and Overture are all dyed to match each other. The three different weights give great options for stitching on Hardanger.
