Rather than coming up with a design, start with a printed or painted needlepoint canvas. The variety available will give you ample designs to choose from including well-known artists, cultural, religious, geometrics, exotics, animals, babies, children, alphabet, holiday, hearts, emotions, special occasion, rugs, furniture, tapestries, florals, fruit, Judaic, Oriental and more. Melissa Shirley, Maggie Company, Rosalyn Cherrie-Soleil, Beth Russell, Rishfeld Designs and Leigh Designs are a few of our featured artists.
Needlepoint designs are in Hand-Painted Canvas, Printed Canvas, Charted Canvas, and Free-form Embroidery. When the design is painted on the canvas by the designer that is called hand-painted canvas. If the canvas is stitch-painted that means each thread intersection is painted so that the stitcher has no questions of what color should be used at that intersection. On the other hand, if it is simply hand-painted, the stitcher will have to use judgment about what colors to use at each intersection. Hand-painted canvases, the most popular type, allow stitchers to be more creative with threads and stitches.
Printed Canvas is done by silk screening or computer printing onto the needlepoint canvas. Printing the canvas in this way allows for faster creation and a lower price than Hand-Painted. Designs are usually in a limited color palette. They can vary a lot in look and price. Needlepoint kits usually include a printed or stamped canvas, or printed canvases can be bought separately.
